Bio: Reese DeMarco hails from an ancient bloodline that was a major contributor to the foundation of Hilltop. The DeMarcos have long history of serving within the Church of Theylin since its inception. Reese himself is the highest ranking church official currently in Hilltop.
Reese maintains a close personal relationship with the Kings of Sendell, Kvatch, and Heldaven. Rumor has it, the King’s in their youth set out on many adventures together.
Since his coronation, Reese has been instrumental at bringing the nations of Hilltop, Kvatch, Heldaven closer together idealistically, in hopes of strengthening ties to ensure the existence of their realms all the while propping up the legitimacy of the Confederacy. If the Confederacy were to collapse into chaos, or worse its collapse into Empire. All would surely be lost.
More recently, Reese finds himself at great political odds with the leadership of the Council of Twelve, especially the interim Chairman Corronaught. The interim Chairman seeks to unravel the ties of Hilltop, Kvatch, Sendell, and Heldaven so that he may dismantle any opposition to Hearthonian leadership.
Even more recently, Hilltop was the victim of a large scale raid of an unknown enemy, the city was sacked and nearly lost. Realising how desperately vulnerable they are, he has convened a meeting of the twelve to plea for military support.
Founding
Hilltop is an ancient city in its own right, legend has it settlers in a mass exodus from Hearthome seeking to escape religious persecution and better economic equality followed the coast of the inland sea into the delta of Hilltop nestled between the mountain tributaries of the immense river of Clearwater, sometime close to end of the 2nd age.
Upon reaching the Hilltop delta, they encountered a peaceful tribe native to the area. The native Hiltopians welcomed the settlers with open arms. The settlers comprised of all manner of skilled tradesmen carried with them the secrets of mathematics, architecture, and construction practices, while the natives were experts in their own right in farming, fishing, and agricultural techniques. This prompted an era of learning and cultural exchange between the two peoples, laying foundation to one the greatest centers of civilization ever to grace several.
The Hilltopians thrived in floodplains of the delta, rich fertile farmlands and the river of Clearwater allowed for an abundance of cheap and readily available foodstuffs which allowed Hilltopians to follow every manner of pursuit. Hilltops population exploded and allowed it to spread its wings to encompass the entire delta, and the blending of expert skills they managed to create a beautiful yet pragmatic town constructed atop its city’s namesake its location protected from the floodplain delta.
Sometime during the 3rd Age in an attempt to exert greater control of the tributaries that fed the great river of Clearwater, engineers attempting to create underground aqueducts to stifle the flow of waters through the floodplains created by melting snow and rainfall deep in the mountains. During this time Hilltop stumbled across quite possibly the largest deposit of iron ore ever recorded in human lands. And with the huge ready amount of fast moving water, their ingenuity granted them to develop a technique to harvest this ore called “Water Sluicing”, which after bearing the cost of floodgates and aqueducts to divert the minor tributaries to harness the power of the water, made the mining of ore extremely fast, efficient, and most of all cheap.
Hilltop then entered an age of wealth and trade spreading its influence all across Elyria. Domestically Hilltop entered into somewhat of a golden age, great centers of learning and philosophy sprung up. Huge mills of ore processing made their mark down the great tributaries of the Clearwater River giving birth to the towns of North Bridge and its sister town South Bridge all in dedication of Hilltops greatest commercial export. Iron Ingots.
Its worth mentioning no where in Severall’s history that an entire nation's wealth was so evenly distributed amongst the populace, all stemming with the original ideals of the people’s who first settled these lands and gainful employment of the iron industry and all the surrounding industries that support it.
Current
Aesthetically speaking Hilltop’s millenniums of prosperity has lent itself to some of the most beautifully adorned halls in all of the confederacy. Some of the grandest temples and palatial compounds glimmer in hues of gold and silver. Millenia of public works have created a maze of aqueducts and sewer systems keeping the finely paved roads of Hilltop clean and pristine. Each street and building is constructed with fruitful purpose, all culminating to what people describe as Theylin’s divine realm here on Severall.
Pragmatically speaking Hilltop has had the luxury of using some of the finest construction materials available to engineers. Iron steel and stone are in such quantity they often replace wood and other materials in design, greatly increasing not only the longevity of structures but the strength, hardness, and resistance to fire.
In the past 700 years however Hilltop has seen its decline, since the Kingdom of Hearthome and its allies banned together and invaded the Kingdoms of Hilltop, Heldaven, and Sendal forcing them to capitulate and sign the Articles of Confederation. Essentially taking their sovereignty in practice but not in name. Huge taxes levied onto Hilltop has stifled the economy and strained relations between regional allies.
More recently, Hilltop was the target of assault of highly trained and powerful dwarf like demi-race taking somewhat the visage of their former allies of Heldaven to the south. Even tho the government has been able to somewhat unravel the origins of these mysterious beings, the population at large has taken too fear and ignorance and widespread racism against dwarves. Causing the dwarves who have called Hilltop their home to suffer assaults and indignities or forcing them to flee Hilltop altogether.
Reese DeMarco in light of recent discoveries about the origins of the race known as Duerger, has made it priority to educate the populace to stem the tide of ignorance and discontent concerning the dwarven populace. He also realizes how important Hilltops regional allies are to the well being of all three of the Kingdoms. He knows he has little time before everything unravels and Hilltop will soon be alone and at the mercy of Vaspasian and the Council of Twelve.
