Heldaven is amongst the most ancient of all settlements in the modern Confederacy, even tho it was man who first settled the lands of West Elyra, it was a band of dwarves lead by Riordain Stoneshoulder who first left the mountains of East Elyra in search of trade adventure and riches. Crossing the great northern divide and traveling the shores of the Inland sea down through the plains of modern day Hilltop, and along the great Hearthinian Mountains, who founded the great mountain city of Heldaven.
Heldaven progenitors came across this mountain whose face steppes a great valley in which a natural event created an immense seam that created a natural cave within the face and exposed its fantastic wealth to any who simply could bend a knee.
It wasn't long before the dwarfs met the caves inhabitants, orcs and kobolds, tens of thousands of them led by a fierce band of fire giants, The dwarves dug in, like no other race on several here they were at home among the giant networks of caves and fissures. For decades the dwarves were besieged by every manner of kobold and orc. After years the resources began to dwindle in their tiny haven, the dwarves knew they didn't have long and that action was necessary for their very survival. It was Riordain himself who led an expeditionary party in search of an escape route. The party was met with seemingly ill fate as they encountered a large force of dreaded fire giants, battle ensued.
When the smoke and ash cleared and the sounds of battle dissipated, only 5 of the 20 expeditionary members were left standing. Riordain was among them, tho gravely injured. In the encampment they found something they did not expect. According to several dispatches found amongst the giants an ancient red dragon by the name of Chardrac the Immolator made his lair here in the mountain of riches. And it was Chardrak who had dominated the giants, kobolds, and orcs. A hasty decision was made, Riordain believed that their only chance of survival was to slay the ancient red. He believed that its death would send the orcs and kobolds into disarray without the fire giant generals keeping the peace between the kobold and orcs, they could take advantage of the chaos and destroy the horde.
The five left the encampment for Chardrak’s lair, injured and desperate, they trudged on with locked jaws of grim determination. The five clansmen entered the lair of the Immolator. Riordain roared and rose up his axe and shield in defiance of the great red. In defense of their clan, their children, and their haven in which they come to call home, the dwarves charged...
Millenniums later, long after the crushing defeat of the orc and kobold hordes and the slaughter of the Chardrak the Immolator, dwarves sing song and drink ale in remembrance of the first dwarven defender and King of Held Haven, Riordain the Defender.
Cuurent:
The colloquial name of Held Haven is Heldaven, humans not truly understanding the gruff accented common of the dwarves over the course of thousands of years simply was lost in translation. Tho its almost guaranteed every dwarf knows the true name of its city and what it means, or any humanoids that substantially experience any of its regional dwarven culture.
A large city of demi races including dwarfs has sprung up in the great valley that lies before the great mountain of the dwarves, and is largely considered one and the same. Tho mountain real estate is usually reserved for dwarven clansmen and their holdings.
Heldaven is a city of construction professionals, merchants, tradesmen, and miners. The largely dwarven population toils endlessly mining the vast riches of the mountain, and to no less extent crafting those riches into some of the best weapons and armor in the Confederacy. So to can be said about the construction engineers whose mark can be seen all over the Confederacy especially in roads, bridges, and fortifications. Merchants of most all demi races can be found here exacting their trades.
The tradition in which Heldaven was founded on also makes it home here. The First Chapter House of the Knights of Road can be found here, a unique culmination of the churches generally accepted by dwarven kind Gallian,Theylin, Nathis, Dardantiss, and Sierra make up these varied chapter houses. An evolution springing up from necessity after the death of their patron Balthiir.
Insidently, these chapter houses have sprung up all over the Confederacy. The order further continues on in the spirit in which is was created by patrolling all roads and trade routes within the Confederacy, as well as the administering the construction of new roads and the maintenance of current roads.
Another Oddity about The Knights of Road, there vast cultural makeup, wide travels, and impartial protections they offer has let them become natural diplomats in and around the Confederacy. They can be seen arbitrating disputes and offering protection for those in need, as well as traveling far as foreign trade diplomats.
