The Original Dragon Orbs
No one seems to know who created the original Dragon Orbs. The earliest mention of them is an ancient, barely legible manuscript from the lost city of Clearwater. The manuscript, called the Drekash Scroll, describes several powerful orbs or different colors whose properties involve the controlling of dragons. Regardless of their creation what is known is that each orb contained the body and soul of an incredibly powerful dragon. These souls somehow powered the orbs, giving them amazing gifts over dragonkind. What is also known is that the last time the original dragon orbs were brought together they were put to a use that ended up reshaping the three worlds.
A group of adventurers, legends say including the then mortal Rawruun, Samael, and Zivix, collected the Dragon Orbs and used them in a powerful magical ritual that forced the dragons of all three worlds to rise up and attack a specific target on each world. On Thealus, dragons all over the world descended upon the Dynasty of the Stone Bear, an ancient and immense empire of Goblinoids that had ruled vast swaths of Thaelus for thousands of years. The desctruction suffered by the Dynasty was unparralled in the history of the three worlds and today little remains. On Severall, the dragons made war against the Drow nation. The Drow, having been made aware of the impending attack, fared much better than the Dynasty. Civilians and children were evacuated to Duergar cities underground and the Drow Nation called on its ally, the Empire of Lark for aid. In addition, the good Dragons of Severall were somehow informed of the massive epic spell before it occurred and many put themselves into a magical slumber to avoid its effects. As a result, the drow and their allies were able to defend themselves with much smaller loss of life and destruction of property.
The powerful magic that created this effect destroyed the original dragon orbs and released the powerful dragons inside them. These Dragons had, however, been warped by the magic of the orbs and driven insane by their millennia of captivity. The massive and ancient dragons began exerting control over their lesser brethren. The five chromatics organized a mass exodus of dragons from Thaelus and Severall to Katrel. There, they began taking over everything the saw and destroying civilization. Soon, concerned that the Chromatics might gain control of an entire world, many of the Metallics moved to Katrel as well. Normal life on Katrel largely came to an end. Dragon Wars raged over the continents of Katrel, cities and nations fell to ruin and the people of the humanoid races scattered and fled.
The New Dragon Orbs
Centuries later, the Chromatic and Metallic Dragons came to an uneasy peace, called the Pax Draconis. Each color controlled huge areas of the world and ruled them as they saw fit. Within the lands of the Silver Dragons, a silver named Myrinalis began training dragonslayers so that the lesser races could begin defending themselves and rebuilding civilization. One of these groups, containing a mortal Gallion StoneShoulder, as well as the mortal Saint Rostik, the Dragonslayer; Chosen Kmar the Animal Lord; Chosen Varsan the Wind Lord; and Bailron Stonesky King of Nevermore, began building a large country for themselves and their people. They defended that land from dragons of all kinds, eventually becoming embroiled in a plan to reforge the dragon orbs and once again trap their original occupants within them. Over the course of many years the group found the rare and powerful reagents they would need to do so. Finally, Dardanis merged his essence with that of his follower Gallian and the two of them remade the powerful artifacts.
The New Dragons Orbs differ from the originals in several ways, but remain extraordinarily powerful artifacts. Ownership of one of these orbs is a sure way to earn the enmity of dragons everywhere.
The Dragon Orbs of Severall
Currently, the Dragon Orbs are separated into two categories: Complete Orbs, and Vacant Orbs. Vacant Orbs have no occupant within them yet.
Complete Orbs:
Gold
Red
These Orbs are six inches in diameter and the surface is covered in glassy smooth scales. Each Orb as translucent and the color of the dragon variety is houses. Each glows with a light of the same color with the brightness of a torch.
The bearer of an Orb automatically knows if there are any dragons within 10 miles of himself. That range increases to 100 miles for dragons of the variety the orb contains. If within 1 mile of a dragon of the Orb's variety, the bearer can determine the exact location and age.
Each Orb can also be used to communicate verbally and visually (like communication through a crystal ball) with the bearers of the other Orbs. This communication extends to all three worlds and across the planes.
The Orb bestows the Armor Class and Saves of a Great Wyrm Dragon of its variety +5 to its bearer. These values cannot be modified in any way as long as the Orb is in the bearers possession. It also bestows complete immunity to the breath weapon of Dragons of its variety. This immunity is only to the breath weapon, not to effects that use the same energy type.
Dominate Monster @will (Dragons of the Orbs variety only) range 500 feet. Ignores Spell Resistance. Will Save DC: 30 + bearers Cha mod negates

In addition, each orb grants an ability unique to that orb.

Gold: The owner of the Gold Orb can call on the powers of any other complete orb, including the dominate and breath weapon abilities, but not the AC, Saves, or Breath Weapon immunity. Each power can be used once per day. The Bearer can cast Dominate Monster on any other individual possessing a Dragon Orb within 1 mile. Will Save DC 30 + Bearers Cha mod. Vacant Orbs:
3 in the Kingdom of Nevermore

Like the complete orbs, vacant orbs are six inches in diameter. They appear smooth and clear, like glass, yet seem unbreakable.
A vacant Orb can be used to absorb the body and soul of any Chromatic or Metallic dragon within 100 feet. For the Orb to function, the Dragon must first be reduced to 1/4 of its total hit points or less. As long as this prerequisite is met, the dragon receives no save. If an attempt is made to use a vacant Orb to absorb a dragon of a variety that already has a Complete Orb associated with it, the attempt automatically fails.
Each Vacant Orb is trapped. They may only safely be used to trap the essence of Chromatic (White, Black, Blue, Green, and Red) and Metallic (Gold, Silver, Copper, Bronze, and Brass) Dragons. If an attempt is made to trap a dragon of a different variety, the orb unleashes a torrent of magical energy that deals 20d6 in raw magical damage to the bearer and they must make a will save DC: 35 or be trapped within the Orb. Those trapped within a Vacant Orb cannot be released until that Orb has been successfully used to trap the essence of a Dragon at which time all other occupants are expelled. The Vacant Orbs can contain up to 100 such individuals. Within the Orb, these individuals may speak and see each other normally, but not physically. No spells, spell-like abilities, or supernatural abilities function within the orb.
