The Cossant of Argi'Not
Shortly after the catastrophic calamities caused by the dragon flight so many years ago, The Cossant of Argi'Not was founded. It was a response to Lore Keeper Michael Stronghammer's observation that, if left unchecked, the world would soon be covered in a darkness that it may well never recover from. So using his family's considerable wealth and prestige in the city of Hearthhome, he brought together those of a like mind and began their work.
They based their ideals not on any specific diety, but rather on what they felt were the virtues of humanity. From their deliberations came the four cardinal virtues of Prudence, Temperance, Justice, and Fortitude. While some gods represent one or more of these Virtues and Beatitudes the Argi'Not do not focus on matters of faith. They are tolerant of the followers of any of the good gods to be sure, but only so long as those followers can demonstrate a willingness to adhere to the Virtues and Beatitudes.
Prudence: Think clearly of your actions, know the outcome and wiegh it heavily with the virtues and beatitudes.
Temperance: Give thought to the beliefs of others, but not at the expense of the Virtues and Beatitudes.
Justice: Make that which is wrong to become right.
Fortitude: Stay your course to the completion of your task in all things, as the Virtues and Beatitudes permit.
To augment the cardinal virtues, eight beatitudes were forged, to help guide the hands of those that would see the world become a brighter place: Humility, Compassion, Courtesy, Devotion, Mercy, Purity, Peace, and Endurance.
Humility: Your actions are not for you, they are for the world. Bow your head in the face of your own prowess, less you stray from the path.
Compassion: Bring hope to those that are hopeless and comfort to those that have known loss, for we have all felt the bite of such things and in sharing such burdens do we overcome them.
Courtesy: Speak plainly, but always mind your tongue. A kind word or gesture is worth a thousand mockeries. Give respect and it shall be returned from friend and foe alike.
Devotion: Give of yourself wholly to a noble cause
Mercy: Strive to sustain life always, be it weal or woe, for without mercy we are as that which we strive against.
Purity: In all things, walk in the light of trueth as for with the righteous half trueths and lies are beneath us.
Peace: In all things let blows be the last resort, for the shedding of blood brings only profound loss to the world. The taking of a life, necessary or not, should always be the last and most disheartening of things.
Endurance: Carry the words and mechanitions of the worlds on your shoulders, and bear your burden proudly for you walk with brothers and sisters, and together, walk the righteous path.
Since the time of it's founding, the Cossant of Argi'Not has established several strongholds, called Cossisary's throughout the three worlds of Severall. Their membership is diverse in professions, but unified in action. Their only real requirement is a good heart, and the will to act.
Organization
The Seekers: Those that seek out problems within the world and relay information back to their Cossisary. While they often do report on activities such as the nobility in areas near enough to their Cossisary to be important, they are not usually used as diplomats. These members of the Argi'Not have the beatitudes relaxed in situations where their prowess alone cannot overcome a specific problem.
A Seeker must be of at least 5th level, and have max skill points in Diplomacy, Gather Information, and Sense Motive for their level. They must also have spent at least 5 years as a member of the Argi'Not.
Generally speaking, there is 1 Seeker per 5 Beatified within any given Cossisary.
The Beatified: Those that are sent to deal with the troubles of the world, usually they work in groups known as the Brother-bound. The Beatified compose the bulk of the Argi'Not's membership. The Beatified are also those that do the necessary administrative duties of the order, as well as are responsible for the production of the accruments needed by their brothers and sisters. These range from the production of weapons and armor, magical items, and securing foodstuffs where appropriate. In contrast, those Beatified who are currently Brother-bound will deposit any wealth or items found during their missions with the order for future use. However, from the word of a Justicar, some items may be given to individuals for extended durations. This does not mean that members of the Argi'Not cannot have their own funds. It only means that funds found while brother-bound belong to the Cossisary.
Any Charactor of any level can become one of The Beatified, so long as they are of good alignment and demonstrate a willingness to adhere to the Virtues and Beatitudes.
There are 3 types of Cossisary's. Great, Major, and Minor.
A Minor Cossisary contains 1d100 Beatified
A Major Cossisary contains 3d100 beatified
A Great Cossisary contains 5d100 beatified
Outfitting for Brother-bound characters:
1st - 3rd level: 100 gp per level in potions/scrolls for any specific mission
4th - 7th level: 500 gp per level in potions, scrolls, weapons, or armor for misions.
8th - 12th level: 1000 gp per level in potions, scrolls, weapons, armor, or wonderous magic items for missions.
13th - 18th level: 2000 gp per level in magical items.
Land entitlement to members of the Cossisary: Each brother and sister of the Cossisary is granted 10 acre of land per character level. Left alone this will generate 1d10 Gp per week, or 5 gp per acre where an average is less time consuming. It also provides a home, and sustinance for day to day life. In the case of the Brother-bound on a mission, changes to levels do not take effect until their return from their current mission.
The Justicars: The Justicars are charged with a number of duties which include determining the worthiness of a task and selecting a Brother-bound group to deal with it, ensuring that each member in their Cossisary follows the path of the Argi'Not, and occasionally dealing with threats too dangerous or too important to be left to more inexperienced members. Justicars on a mission are also considered Brother-bound. They are also tasked with responding to diplomatic requests or to resolve diplomatic disputes concerning members of their Cossisary. In dealing with matters internally, the word of the Justicars is absolute, unless a Cossant overrides them. This is, however, a very rare occurance.
A Justicar must be at least 12th level, have the backing of a present Justicar, and have demonstrated a consistant and acceptable understanding of the Virtues and Beatitudes. They must also have spent at least 5 years as a member of Argi'Not.
Generally speaking, there is 1 Justicar for every 25 Beatified.
The Cossants: The Cossants are the last and most absolute word concering the Virtues and Beatitudes. They rarely march out into the world, but if the need seems dire enough then they will neither hesitate nor falter. It is to the Cossant that all comparison's are made in regards to the Virtues and Beatituds.
A Cossant must be of at least 16th level, and be voted and accepted by more then half of the current Justicar's within any specific Cossisary. Once that accomplished, they hold the office until either death, or retirement. They must also have spent at least 15 years as a member of the Argi'Not.
There is only 1 Cossant for any specific Cossisary.
The Great Cossisary of Mistmoore: Great Cossisary, 625 members. 25 Justicar's, 100 Seekers, 1 Cossant, 474 Beatified.
The Great Cossisary of Mistmoore is currently the largest and most influential amoungst the Cossant of Argi'Not. It is here that every year all of the Cossants, or their representatives drawn from their Justicars if their duties are expected to delay them overmuch, gather and to discuss the next years direction for the order. It is located along The Great Divide River, nearly 1000 miles south of the Great Inland Sea. It sits upon a large messa where The Great Divide has carved out a 600 foot canyon, overlooking the turbulant waters below. It is also here that the Grand Cossant presides, the voice and will of the virtues.
The current Grand Cossant is Lowric Brandedhand. Before Lowric joined the order years before he was an adventurer, well known for his renown with his double bladed sword.
