Sometime in the middle of the 4th age a little village came to prominence for an unusual reason. Vinegar. Many of the historians will tell you it was pure luck in one particular vintner's case that led to an unprompted discovery of one of the regions multi-purpose formulations.
One summers eve Carmen Leviticus was experimenting with his newest batch of red wine.Carmen sought after a way to increase the speed of the natural fermentation process of his red wine. Every time he tried to introduce more compounds to promote fermentation the reaction was always the same. The wine was overly fermented, and turned the concoction to near pure acid.
One fateful evening Carmen was toying with his research and decided to add a simple hand crank attached to a set of fins inside the cask to simply allow an easier way to introduce the compounds necessary for fermentation. What he didn't expect was the effect of accidentally introducing air into the product via his new stirring mechanism during the fermentation process. He also noticed that pressure from the fermentation process would build quickly and needed to be released else the barrel may break. Unknowingly this process of adding extra air and releasing the pressure was exactly what he needed, not for fast fermenting wine but for a great tasting vinegar that had a myriad of beneficial applications.
This product not only showed to be a culinary delight, but served as a food preservative far more effective than salts. He noticed it also made a wonderful non poisonous mild cleaning solution. After months of further experimentation he found that it made a quite potent herbicide that would kill the non hardy weeds in farmers fields. Soon after that the medicinal value was apparent, it being used as an antiseptic to prevent infection from lacerations and minor wounds. The applications were endless, and soon Vinegar was a staple not only in the small village of Estermead but the confederacy at large.
Current:
Today Estermead is a bustling town centered around the production and trade of Vinegar, after just about one thousand years the Lividicus vintners have perfected there vinegar making a myriad of different types each suited best to its purpose.
The surrounding area of the city couldn't be more stereotypical of a fairy tale setting.. Miles upon miles of gently rolling hills covered in various breeds of grapes create a rainbow hued landscape of sun kissed grapes. In the morning, low fogs rolling off the lake embrace the vines allowing condensation to form as the sun begins to rise, and its life giving light dazzles off an ocean of cool droplets of water.
The city itself has experienced slow organic growth and has a rich hellenistic architectural style, buildings and homes made from dark hardwoods prefaced with white slate panels, bleached in the towns most abundant resource. Vinegar.
Tall cooling towers from the vinegar distillery releases the pungent acidic sweet and sour smell of fermenting vinegar, and it wafts over the town like a thin blanket. Giant oak vats that number in the hundreds can been seen all throughout town. Each of them containing a take on Carmen Lividicus’s original formula.
Small lake barges roll in and out bringing the towns lifeblood to trade ports like Medivar. Caravans constantly moving through the town intent on delivering barrel upon barrel to neighboring villages hamlets and towns is common place in Estermead.
Estermead continues to provide the worlds finest vinegar’s across the Confederacy and abroad. Its even whispered that the Empire has grown a taste for this malted delicacy and has become an important trade partner, further whispers of men trying to plot a trade route via the Central Plains to establish trade with Es’Draery Lar.
