The Coming Storm
or
The Battle of Hearthome
by Liira Skysong
A hot wind blows o'er southern plains
And clouds begin to stir
With growing strength, consuming all
A tempest being born
A lightning strike from high above
Reveals a looming form
Not god, but Mountain of a man
Controls the brewing Storm
His call rings out across the plains
A call to join or die
And he will lead them to the north
Where shining cities lie
The storm it rages 'cross the plains
From south to north it blows
Leaving nothing in its wake
'Cept feasting for the crows
In Rawruun's name it carves a path
Toward cities made of stone
To devour all within its path
And leave behind the bones
Yet not all are unaware
Two royal sons can see
And avoid the fate, the storm it brings
To bring warning as they flee
First to Sendall they escape
With its wooden walls
They know it won't survive the night
So for refugees they call
Leading those with no defense
They say goodbye to king
Who valiantly tries to hold the town
Against the coming tide
And from hours away the refugees watch
The fires of Sendall light the skies
The only hope now seems to lie
On dwarven sword and shield
So with those they meet upon the way
A new plan is revealed
To Southton and Heldaven run
And light the warning fires
But attacks from dark skinned drarven kin
Show that many more conspire
To plot the ruin of kingdoms all
And bring them crashing down
So to this end they will destroy
All peoples, cities, towns
But the battle's won, the watchfire lit
And answering torches flare
No greater sight to heroes eyes
They know the dwarves are there
And North the trek continues on
With Southton now in sight
They see the gleam of plate and spear
In all its dwarven might
But can this dam hold back the tide
Or are there cracks within
Do enemies lurk behind the lines
Committing hidden sins
But the work for heroes never ends
The warning must be passed
So on through dwarven caves they go
Where hidden threats are massed
Through fungal caves and darkened depths
Their journey carries on
Past creatures strange and mushroom men
To Heldhaven and beyond
But the tiniest hero ever known
A toadstool brave and strong
Reveals the plans of the Evil Three
Now something must be done
He leads them to a cave of webs
Where Darkness now resides
And battle ensues with a spider mage
And a hero nearly dies
But triumph theirs, the battle won
Yet time seems running out
They pass the den of Darkness
With still more to puzzle out
Into to the room with buttressed walls
With caverns south and north
A choice of evils now they face
Yet cannot stop them both
South slaves unearth an artifact
A stone of deepest black
Attended to by lords of Lark
our heroes must turn back
North the Duergar army massed
Many thousands strong
Soon to repeat the Hilltop ploy
On Heldhaven all along
The heroes torn, they must decide
Upon which path to turn
But with no knowledge and out of time
However will they learn?
Behold the answer lies inside
The journal of a slave
Whose lovelorn letters to Matilde
Survive him past the grave
Through visions he was shown the way
To flood one of the caves
By sabotaging of the walls
Heldhaven could be saved
Although this means the dig endures
And through it the artifact
It will ensure the dwarves survive
Heldhaven shan't be sacked
The heroes follow slain hero's plan
The walls come crashing down
And water pours in from above
The Duergar army drowns
Our heroes through the hole they climb
Into mines of dwarven friends
To learn barbarians surround without
The siege it now begins
They meet forthwith with dwarven king
And learn the dire news
Without the Confederation's aid
They all are surely doomed
(new)
On to Hilltop the heroes sent
Armed with dwarven pleas
To call a council of the twelve
Ere Heldhaven is deceased
But Hilltop also is beset
With Unrest of its own
Spies from winged empire fly
And agitate the crowd
Our heroes chase the villain down
And soothe the angry mob
Proceeding to the castle gate
To bear their dire news
But Lo! The fiends are not yet done
Our heroes still beset
The King is slain!
His Brother framed!
The quest is nearly wrecked
Yet Thelin's Light is shining down
Through these stormy skies
Revealing truth from all the lies
To set our heroes free
Yet freedom isn't truly free
One hero is the Hilltop heir
Quest and kingdom now are joined
And council is prepared.
One hero lost to aid the dwarves
One gained to help the cause
King and heroes now move on
Seeking more support
Against the Storm and Dark winged bird
Who seek to kill us all
