Theyllus, or sometimes referred to as The Middle World, has had something of a turbulent past. Long ago, a powerful spell was cast. This spell forced dragons of all types and sizes to go on a rampage over the three worlds. However, on Theyllus, there was a cataclysmic side effect. But to understand that you first have to understand the manner in which the three worlds co-exist. The worlds of Severall and Katral do not spin in the same direction, in fact they spin opposite from each other. This is, in part some believe, due to the nature of Ailium, the magical substance from which magic draws it's power. As a result of this, some believe a sort of friction is transferred to Theyllus. It is this friction, they say, that led to an unusual number and magnitude of earth nodes. These nodes are comprised of Ailium, however some force, perhaps this friction some scholars have postulated, have imbued them with strange properties. It is said that arcane spellcasters can tap into these properties, and thereby increase the potency of their magic. And it was because of these nodes that a cataclysm broke Theyllus. Whether the reasoning of some is right is unknown, however what we do know is that, as the great spell compelling the dragons to action was cast, so too did many of the earth nodes erupt in devastation. Whole civilizations were lost in a moment of magical mishap. Whole continents were shattered, tidal waves hundreds of feet high scoured clean the coasts, new seas and oceans made in the blink of an eye. My meager talents fail to convey the enormity of Theyllus's fracturing. Were that enough...But no, after the smoke and carnage, magic itself seemed to revolt. There are places were spells behave erratically, and there are others where magic has no power at all. Over time these places were given names...Wild magic, and Dead magic zones, respectively. So, take care upon the blasted soils of Theyllus, for at any moment you may find yourself bereft of the magic so many these days have come to rely upon.
