Collegium Savant
Early in the second age, while humans were still struggling to understand the distinctions between the schools of magic, the elves of the fledgling Collegium developed the Three Worlds first specialists. Not long after, the first true masters of school specialization appeared, the Collegium Savants.
Developed in the safety and isolation of The Father's Dictum and nurtured in the academic environment of the Collegium, the Savants learned to distill the magics of their chosen school to a strength and purity that other mages of their era thought impossible. They also developed methodologies that allowed them to retrain foundational aspects of their magical knowledge to regain the ability to learn spells from one of the schools they had ignored in their initial apprenticeship.
In the millennia since the emergence of the Collegium, magical knowledge has grown astronomically and understanding much of it requires ever deepening degrees of specialization. Due to this, the Collegium Savant has become a backbone of the Collegium itself. Specialization is more the rule than the exception among the wizards of the Collegium and the Savants are far and away the most common prestige class among those specialists. In the last several centuries, however, a new specialist prestige class has emerged to challenge the Savants supremacy. The Master Specialists, with unique abilities but similar strengths, have shaken up the halls of the Collegium. The Savants and the Masters have begun a friendly rivalry, constantly seeking to best the other and prove that their methodology is the best expression of their chosen schools.

Opposition Apprenticeship: At first level the Collegium Savant enters a second apprenticeship with a friendly Savant of 5th level or higher who has specialized in one of the schools that the PC has given up. This new apprenticeship teaches the Savant to retrain his mind to accept spells from one of his banned schools. Once the Savant has chosen which of the schools he will relearn this choice cannot be changed through any means short of a powerful wish. At this level, the Savant may memorize and cast spells of that school but must dedicate two spell slots of the spells level for each spell he so memorizes. For example, a Savant who has specialized in abjuration and has given up evocation and necromancy chooses to relearn evocation. He decides to memorize a Fireball Spell, and so must dedicate two 3rd level spell slots to that single Fireball.
Researching and Scribing spells from his chosen opposition school cost twice as much as normal spells and take twice as much time to scribe, but still take up the standard number of pages in a spellbook.
Specialist Tenacity: At 2nd level the DC's to dispel a spell from the Savants specialist school or counter a spell of his specialist school using the Dispel Magic line increases by +1. At 8th level it increases again to +2
Specialist Power: At 3rd Level the Savants caster level for his specialist school increases by +1. This increases by a further +1 at 6th and 9th levels.
Specialist Defense: At 4th level the Savant learns to defend himself from his specialist school gaining a +2 Insight bonus to saves vs spells and spell-like abilities from his specialist school.
Opposition Researcher: At 5th level the Savant has learned all he can from his second apprenticeship. He may now freely research, scribe, memorize and cast spells from the school he chose during his Opposition Apprenticeship at their normal prices, times, and spell slots.
Specialist Counterspelling: At 7th level the Collegium Savant is treated as having the Improved Counterspelling feat, but may only use it to counter spells of their specialist school. This ability counts as the Improved Counterspelling feat for anything that has it as a prerequisite, however, any feat or ability gained that uses this ability as prerequissite may also only be used or applied to spells of the specialists chosen school.
Specialist Metamagic: At 10th level the Savant learns to more easily apply metamagic feats to the spells of his chosen school. Whenever the Savant applies a metamagic feat to a spell of his specialist school that feat raises the spell level by 1 less than normal (minimun of 1).
