The Lifework of Galleon
Galleon, Artisan of the Heavens, offers many blessings to his faithful. None, however, compare to the opportunity he grants his most skillful crafters, The Lifework.
The Lifework of Galleon is the ultimate culmination of an artisans craft. It represents the pinnacle of both the skill and the faith of a worshiper of the Craft Lord. In making a Lifework, the crafter sacrifices an entire lifetime of skill and talent into the creation of a single object. Over the course of days, sometimes weeks, he works tirelessly and meticulously, the end result being an item of sublime beauty and extraordinary power.
Only the finest of artisans and smiths have the skill needed to craft a Lifework. Many of Galleons faithful train their whole lives chasing the dream of making one. Not all great crafters do so, however. To create a Lifework, the crafter must be willing to sacrifice his skill to his God and once that sacrifice is made he'll never craft an item using that skill again. For those that make their living as artisans or smiths, giving up their skill for that one perfect creation is a tall order. Those that do choose to, however, are celebrated by the faith of Galleon Stoneshoulder, their masterpiece held up as the ultimate expression of faith and mastery.
The Rite of Remembrance:
Lifeworks are more than just finely crafted magical items, they house the experiences that helped their maker gain the skill needed to create them. These experiences may be accessed by Galleons Faithful with a ritual called the Rite of Remembrance. The Lifework is placed in the center of a circle drawn in silver dust. The celebrants of the Rite who wish to access these experiences sit around the circle and chant prayers in the Dwarven tongue for an hour. At the end of the hour, the celebrants enter a meditative state similar to elven reverie. In this state they see the memories of the creator of the Lifework as he gains the skill needed to make it. For many Lifeworks, these memories are of endless hours in workshops and smithies learning the trade, interspersed with memories of family, friends, and the community in which they lived. For Lifeworkers who were also great leaders or adventurers, though, these memories tell the tales of the momentous events that shaped their careers and were thus shaped by their careers. These memories are not a complete moment by moment recording of the crafters life. They are more like a journal, immortalizing the hard work, difficult lessons, and momentous events of the artisans journey towards mastery of his craft.
Any Lifework is a holy object to the Church of Galleon, both for its intrinsic value and its use as a link to the past. Crafters can entreat the Church for the chance to visit the memories of crafters who have come before, to learn skills through watching past masters. Churches of Galleon often have a specialized vault to house the Lifeworks of its greatest members, vaults they call Soul-Forged Tabernacle.
Lifeworks are owned by their creator until his death. If the Lifeworker has a direct heir, the Lifework can either pass to that heir or be given to the Church of Galleon for safe keeping in a Soul-Forged Tabernacle. The Church keeps careful records of who currently owns a given Lifework. Every once in a while, a member of the faith earns the right to choose and wield a Lifework for great service to the Church. Theft of a Lifework is considered a grave crime against the Church and thieves are pursued relentlessly. Punishment for such a crime can vary but is often extreme. Destruction of a Lifework is considered a vile sin in the faith and a terrible crime in most Dwarven lands. Punishment for the purposeful destruction of a Lifework is often death.
Creating a Lifework:
Requirements: in order to create a Lifework you must fulfill the following:
Deity: Galleon Stoneshoulder
Skill: You must possess 13 ranks in the skill, or all skills, needed to create the Lifework. All the ranks in this skill are sacrificed in the process of creating the Lifework, and once made, no further skill points may ever be put in the skill.
Once in a Lifetime: No matter how many crafting skills the character possesses, he may only create one Lifework. Ever.
For every rank in the skill sacrificed you can craft an item worth 10,000gp. Characters with the Skill Focus feat in that crafting skill may also sacrifice the feat (Once sacrificed, this feat cannot be replaced in any manner). The Feat counts as an additional 3 ranks. This gold piece amount is maximum base price of the Lifework. The maximum base cost of a Lifework is 230,000gp (with Skill Focus, 200,000k without) unless the character is level 21 or above. Creating a Lifework follows all the standard rules for creating a magical item of its type except for the following. The creators caster level for this item is equal to his Character Level. The sacrifice of both the skill points and the ability to put further points in that skill supplies the experience cost and all spellcasting and Item Creation feat requirements of the item. The creator must supply 25% of the material cost of the item in raw supplies of the finest sort.
Epic Lifeworks: Once a character reaches Epic levels the amount he gains per skill point sacrificed changes. Every skill rank after the initial 20 ranks is now worth 200,000gp. At 21st level, a characters could make a Lifework worth 1,000,000gp.
