The Royal Order of the Arcane Militant
The Royal Order of the Arcane Militant are the elite arcane casters of the Irydrian Royal Military. Members of the Order can be found throughout the ranks of the Army and the Navy, from the Captains leading elite forces to the Generals and Admirals that lead them. To the military they serve they are heroes and celebrities, the brilliant and gifted who lead men to victory. To the public they protect they are figures of wonder and respect. Called R.O.A.M.ers or Silvercloaks in common parlance, they are men and women who dedicate, and sometimes sacrifice, their lives to the rigors of intense magical and military training in order to safeguard the realm.
Arcane casters who wish to join the ranks of the Royal Order must first join the Royal Military and serve for a period of two years. If their commanding officers judge them worthy they are sent to the Royal Military Academy’s College of Strategic Arcanum for further testing. The requirements for entry are difficult to satisfy. Naturally, only the brightest students of wizardry and the most gifted practitioners of sorcery are admitted. Students, however, must also keep themselves in excellent physical condition, show a deep understanding of strategy, logistics, and/or espionage, and prove themselves capable of both physical combat and of leading men into battle.
Training at the Academy lasts 2 years during which the cadet carries only whatever rank he earned during his first two years in the military. Once a cadet graduates from this process, he enters a 2 - 4 year apprenticeship with an older and more experienced graduate in the field. At this point he gains his commision, his Silvercloak, and the rank of Lieutenant. Once his commanding officer determines the apprentice has learned all he can he gains the rank of Captain. Silvercloak Captains form the majority of the Order.
Captains of the Arcane Militant operate with a great deal of autonomy during times of peace. They are expected to maintain their skills and often can be found travelling as observers in foreign wars, and even participants if the cause is just and they receive permission from their CO. They also lead elite forces on missions of utmost importance to the Crown. Many belong to adventuring groups as well, working for those groups when their duty permits.
In times of war the Arcane Militant, working with the Devout Militant, form the magical arm of the Royal Military.
Arcane Militant are recognized everywhere in the realm and beyond by their signature Silver Cloaks. Made of cloth-of-silver and trimmed in black and gold, the hooded cloaks bear the Arcanists rank, medals and awards over the left breast and the standard of the Kingdom over the right. Amongst themselves, the Arcanists often use their armor as a signifier of prestige and power in addition to their rank with the more expensive and enchanted armors signifying greater power and respect.

Rank: The Arcane Militant gains the rank of Captain in the Royal military with all the privileges and responsibilities that rank carries. Further rank past this must be earned in the standard manner for the military.
Command Specialty (ex): At first level the Arcane Militant focuses on one of two areas of Command Specialty. If they qualified for the class with the Extend Spell feat they get option number 1. If they qualified with the Widen Spell feat they get option 2. If they came into the class with both they must choose which path to follow. Once chosen, this choice cannot be changed.
Security, Logistics, and Intelligence: The Arcanist gains a +1 caster level to spells of the Abjuration, Divination, and Conjuration (Creation) schools.
Command, Operations, and Strategy: The Arcanist gains a +1 caster level to spells of the Evocation, Transmutation, and Conjuration (Teleportation) schools.
Weapon Focus: Arcane Militant are expected to maintain a higher degree of competence in melee combat than other mages. At first level the Arcanist Militant chooses a weapon with which he is already proficient and gains the Weapon Focus Feat when using that weapon.
Trained Vigor: At second level the Arcane Militant’s greater physical training manifests as a +1 to all fortitude saves. At 7th level this bonus increase to +2
Armored Caster: The Arcane Militant training teaches them to cast spells in light armor without arcane spell failure.
Bonus Metamagic Feat: At 4th and 8th level the Arcanist Militant gains a bonus metamagic feat for which they qualify.
Command Specialty 2 (ex): Part of the Arcane Militant training involves study of the essence of magic. In her training, she learns to adapt to the rapidly changing conditions of the battlefield. Although she may prepare some of her spells with metamagic feats, sometimes she needs to modify a spell on the spur of the moment. Beginning at 5th level, an Arcane Militant may cast a spell as if it were under the effects of the extend spell feat if she chose Security, Logistics, and Intelligence or of the Widen Spell feat if she chose Command, Operations, and Strategy. She does not need to prepare this in advance, and it does not increase the casting time or use a higher spell slot. The Arcanist Militant can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 1 + Primary Casting Ability Modifier (min 1)
Command Specialty 3 (ex): Particularly important to Arcane Militant is the ability to use fewer spells to accomplish combat goals, so they perfect their understanding of spell dimensions and durations to cast spells affected by the Extend Spell or Widen Spell metamagic feat with even greater effect. Any time an Arcane Militant of 10th level who chose Security, Logistics, and Intelligence casts a spell modified by the Extend Spell Feat, the spell duration extends by a further 100% of the base spells duration. Anytime an Arcane Militant of 10th level who chose Command, Operations, and Strategy casts a spell modified by the Widen Spell feat, the spell area increases by 100% rather than 50%. Thus, instead of a widened fireball spell having a 30-ft.-radius spread, it has a 40-ft. radius spread.
