The Church of Arcane Mystery
(N, CN, Polytheistic, Zivix/Dardanis)
The Church or Arcane Mystery is a small polytheistic faith that as started to rise as the level of prominent and dangerous magic item use has increased. With the advent of totems that can level mountains, ships that can speed down rivers powered by magic, flying ships, and even flying cities (not really, we like this one), members of this faith feel that powerful magic items have ended up in the hands of those ill-equipped to use them. They feel that those items would be better served hidden away and used only by those with the knowledge and foresight to use them properly.
Dogma:
Members of this faith firmly believe that many of the woes that plague the face of Severall currently can be traced back to the blatant misuse of the magic that Dardanis has allowed us to use, and that the only solution is to steal it, or the knowledge of its creation, back so that a countermeasure may be created. Whether this magic is the powerful mythals that protect certain cities, the arcane engines that power ships, or even the aelium and artifact weapons that legendary heroes wield. They believe that the use of magic of this caliber has spiraled out of control and could end up causing the destruction of everything and everyone that calls Severall home. To this end, they believe that only those who have the proper respect for those items and what they can do should even be allowed access to them. They of course refer to themselves.
As of yet, they are a very small faith, but some of their rhetoric is very persuasive; especially as the horror stories of devastation of wars fought with magic increase. Wherever these stories abound there can be found a member of the faith whispering into the ears of those present of how dangerous this misuse of magic is and how it would be better locked away where only the chosen could access it. How many lives could have been saved if the heretics had never had the magic in the first place?
Low level items are below their notice, such as the common adventurer's gear, but they will notice items that could have an effect on the world around them (epic, artifacts, etc.). Members believe that it is their duty to know at all times where such items are, as well as any reported powers that the items may have. If possible, a plan will be set in motion to secure the item if the current owner is deemed unworthy, which is likely if the owner is not one of the faithful. Currently there is no vault for storing items they have retrieved...the faith is still growing, after all.
Structure:
The faith is organized into cells that are headed by the most powerful/influential cleric of the immediate area who is called the Director. Other members are then given rank depending on their specialty and the highest level of cleric spell available to them. Those who specialize in only finding information about items are called Researchers and those who go about gathering them are called Collectors. So a 5th level Cleric/ 3rd level rogue would be a Collector of the 3rd Circle.
Relationships:
Most faiths/governments/individuals like their magic items right where they are and would want nothing to do with this faith if they knew it existed. For the time being they are completely an underground faith, content to grow in whispers and subterfuge, but they firmly believe their time is coming. There are many who still attend their parent churches to gather what information they can about powerful items that may be about in the world.
Entry:
Feat: Censure Magic (Polytheistic)
Alignment: N or CN
Special: Must be able to cast spells from one of Zivix's domains of Greed or Trickery, and one of Dardanis' domains of Spell or Magic
