Genesis of the Elves
Upon incarnation, Enaelleyith and Mekhaereth quickly worked through a strategic vision for the first 100 years. Having been brought into being with a moderate level of power, amplified by paragonness, they were able to jointly craft a plan for child bearing, rearing and exploration/expansion. They were able to spawn a brood and raise them in the safety of Corellaestra while exploring their arcane and planar interests. The first 100 years would see the births of their children, influenced by arcane and divine magicks. It is speculated that the spontaneous environmental speciation common to the race is a result of this early magickal influence on the Elven genome.
En’s divinations showed the vast scope of the Elven Forest and Mek began to map out a journey that would cover the most ground. En’s bouts of Prescience gave hints as to future challenges and allowed mitigation of some of the worst to come. Once the first generation had been reared and raised, the second generation was raised as a joint effort. This would continue (it takes a village) for the duration of life at Corellaestra. The third generation would be intertwined with the first brood of grandchildren. All told, the first 100 years would see twenty-seven broods across nine generations. The end of which brought about the removal of the intentional magickal effects and the allowance of future generations to age naturally.
The Second Century
As the population burgeoned, En began planning the initial exodus from Corellaestra as Mek left on an exploratory sojourn. She would head north and En would focus on the south. During this planning, En experienced an Apocalyptic Revelation. Nightmares of blood and death began to plague him. He felt a pressure building toward an Arcane Annihilation and became obsessed with preventing the loss of the fiercely fought for sum of Elven Arcane Knowledge. The Brood of Laucian (First generation offspring of En and Mek) was potent, driven and had quickly amplified the existing lore and power through increased specialization. Led by Cardelaeth (eldest of Laucian’s children), the cabal of siblings made progress at a disquieting pace, outstripping safeguards and established protocols. This would have been manageable if not for the presence of Sonellion, the first Elf born Evil. Her knowledge and ambition matched that of her brother, but she had none of his temperance. En foresaw decades of intrigue, positioning and betrayal, ending in assassinations and widespread destruction. He removed himself from planning the founding of First Home and sequestered himself in his tower for nearly a year. He emerged with a blueprint for the Injunction and made a pilgrimage to beseech the Creators.
The Dictum of Enaelleyith
“I attach no moral significance to your pursuit of knowledge. I can help you perfect your technique. Master your Art. Discipline your Will.” – The Father
To save his children and their accumulated Lore, En approached the creators. His goal was an Aegis that would protect and preserve, in perpetuity, the Arcane Morphic. The culture of learning, of shared knowledge and perpetual growth that he had fostered within his broods had to be crystallized. En initially balked at such a forced imposition of authority. He spent months reconciling such a move with his internal desire for freedom of choice. In the end, as his visions spiraled into darkness, he made his decision. The next few months were spent in conjuration and divination, looking for as much knowledge and expertise as he could find. When he felt he could delay no longer, he approached the Creators with his plan.
An Injunction Against the Misuse of Temporal Arcane Power and For the Preservation of Equanimity and Progressive Cooperation: Toward a Surety of Mystical Evolution and Magickal Community
To ensure the Elven Arcane Legacy (and ultimately, he hoped, Supremacy) En mandated that all Arcane casters maintain a complete removal from temporal politics, religion and mundane power. Arcane resources should be pooled and expanded for the good of all of Elvenkind. No resource or effort thrown away in pursuit of politicking or amassing religious potency. A Society of Enlightenment focused on exponential advancement in all facets of the arcane was the goal, and the Collegium would be the Vehicle.
The Frost Wastes
Having made his plea to the Creators – En spent his time divining the most likely outcomes. His Prescience indicated the magic (specifically the planar barriers) in the area from which the Injunction would be cast would wear thin. The Northwestern Tundra, what would come to be known as Caernig’s Spur, would bear the bulk of the casting and subsequent planar anomalies. He spoke with the Mother about his concerns and she assured him she would handle things. Her wanderlust had taken her through many realms and she would prepare one of her broods to safeguard the region.
After the invoking of The Injunction, planar breaches would appear with frequency and the more significant ones would result in planar bleed, coterminous areas of overlap. En’s prognostications indicated the most severe would be with Faerie and the Plane of Shadows. Many other planes would overlay the northern tundra, making it nearly uninhabitable.
Minor breaches would be common and flare ups of more severe breaches would be frequent but short-lived (as Elves are concerned)
The Third Century
The next hundred years would be foundational for the Elves. En established the Elven Collegium and began implementing his vision of the Arcane Morphic. Under the Aegis of the Injunction, learning flourished among the nascent casters and knowledge began to build. In the North, Mek seeded her children throughout the frozen tundra. The eight clans of the Frost Elves are established and tasked with mapping the region and it’s planar anomalies. Over the next few centuries the traditions and territories of the Clans would become solidified. The Frost Elves were established as a matriarchy and leadership was handled by each of the Clan’s Wise Women.
The Fourth Century
The population continued to grow and expand throughout the Elven Forest. The middle centuries of the Second Age saw significant Spontaneous Speciation amongst the Elves. Varied and numerous bloodlines arose, giving birth to the Isle Elves, Frost Elves, High Elves and myriad half breeds. Some of the half elven bloodlines continue on to the present day and boast a Sorcerous lineage. Some faded after a few generations. There are many small families that live in pockets closely tied to their particular speciation. It is not uncommon to wander high into a whistling chasm and find a few dozen Avoreal Elves already well established.
As First Home and the Collegium grew, many of the specifically Elven prestige classes were refined. The Collegium Savant rose as the primary class of Elven specialist wizards. The familial nature of Elvish magic, specifically those trained among the Collegium, gave rise to the Collegium Arcanists. These two classes would be the primary vehicle for the advancement of the Collegium during the First Millenium.
The Fifth Century
Mek returned to First Home and, with En, birthed numerous broods. She spent a significant amount of time travelling the newly created routes between the first dozen elven cities. With the help of Lorellian and the twins Illeveth and Illevarth, she safeguarded many of the pathways between the cities and established an order of Druids and Rangers that would guard the Southern Wilds. 1500 years later, this Order would come to be known as the Orcmori after their actions during the horror of the Orc Tide.
The Mages (meaning all Arcane Casters) of the Collegium continued to accelerate their combined knowledge. Fast travel was becoming necessary. Teleportation circles and Leyline travel became popular areas of focus in order to connect the burgeoning research outposts.
The Sixth Century
As the population of the initial Elven exodus down the east and west flowing rivers blossomed, contingents set out to found new kingdoms. Subsequently, Drav’Daertha and Sylvanemede, two of the larger Elven cities, are founded.
After a tumultuous and potentially deadly encounter, Mek secures trade, protection and travel rights with the Unseelie Court of the Northern Frost Wastes. The Gloaming Prince, Caernigraic, entered into a bargain with the Matriarchy of the Eighth Tribe of Frost Elves. This does not sit well with the Mist Walker and Ghostwind tribes of the south. In what some see as the culmination of a plan long in the making, the Eighth Tribe brakes with the Frost Elves and becomes the tribes of Tundra Elves. This subspecies will tend toward cross breeding with the various planar beings of the Frost Wastes and will uphold the letter of the bargain with the Unseelie.
The Seventh Century
As the Collegium continues to burgeon, the schools of magic become appreciably specialized. Teaching begins to splinter amongst the specializations into sub-schools and sub-types. As some of the darker aspects of magic are explored, a substantial portion of the population grows increasingly uncomfortable with the goings on in the Collegium. Having seen this eventuality, En aids Sonellion in founding the city of Bitterfrost. Far from the Collegium proper, the students of the darker arts are able to continue their studies undisturbed (and undisturbing). Over the next hundred years, Sonellion and the city of Bitterfrost will be forgotten by the general population and fade into memory.
Having secured the last piece of the Elven Forest, Mek returns to First Home and spends decades with En. They solidify the travel routes, visit the major cities and begin many of the traditions that are still central to the Elven Culture. Their tour of the Elven lands bolsters many of the principalities leadership and demonstrates the best of Elven society. They set a standard to strive for and are able to bolster significant portions of the population as their legendary fecundity bears rapidly ripening fruit.
The Eighth Century
As the end of the millennium approached, En and Mek spent significant resources ensuring the safety of the Elven Forest and the Elven way of life. They continued the tour of cities, helped the founding of new ones, bolstered defenses and reinforced trade routes and the uniquely Elven marketplaces. En spent countless years advising the leaders of the Collegium Schools and Mek would disappear for years into the North. Under the protection of the Injunction, the Elves grew insular and guarded. There was little interaction with the other races of Severall. Owing to the gargantuan size the Elven Forest, there were still vast swathes of unexplored land. Adventures were abundant and life for the average Elf was idyllic. The patience of the race allowed for a natural growth and progression towards a typical Elven life.
The Ninth Century
Having solidified the Elven lifestyle, En and Mek spent significant time in pursuit of their own agendas. En ensconced himself in the Collegium, scribing spells onto stone tablets and working fantastic Summonings with his cabal. Mek travelled the Planes, bringing back voluminous works on all manner of alien subjects and seeding the libraries of the Collegium and undiscovered ruins in the Forest with foreign tomes and items of power.
In the latter half of the century, En and Mek sent out a call to all leaders of the Elven tribes. Elves from throughout the Forest made pilgrimage to Corellaestra for a convocation with the Mother and Father. Court was held and, over many years, all present had an opportunity to ask questions and gain clarity on any aspect of Elven life. This began the tradition of Elven leaders travelling to Corellaestra every hundred years to forge new relationships and maintain old ones.
The Tenth Century
As the First Convocation ended, En and Mek announced their departure from the daily lives of the Elves. They would continue to monitor the goings on in the Elven Forest and wander the cities and byways in disguise. Their intent was to ensure that there was time enough for the Elves to learn to live without them while they still had the opportunity to correct any unforeseen events. As their time drew to a close, they spent the last decade with each other. After having dedicated their existence to their race, they found comfort in each other knowing that they had prepared their offspring as best as they were able. Secure in the profundity of their Legacy, En and Mek walked off the mortal stage and entered into Legend.
