The Directorate of the Magi Headquarters: The City of Eternal Darkness, Lark Current Arch Magus: Nasteem Doth’Dakar The Directorate of the Magi is an advisory body of Imperial Lark’s Senate that is charged with the coordination and oversight of all agencies and functions concerning arcane magics within the empire. Its other mandates have grown to include the registration of magic users and items as well as the regulation and enforcement of its policies. The Directorate of the Magi is divided amongst multiple offices each with their own respective tasks and expertise. Below is a quick reference to its basic organizational structure, more details can be found later in this write up. The Directorate of Liaisons: Responsible for coordination and communication amongst Imperial ministries The Directorate of Regulation and Enforcement: Responsible for framing and enforcement of arcane standards and enforcement of directorate policy, as well as the registration licensing and upkeep of all magi within the empire. (Prereq Circle 1) Magus: Fully fledged operating member of the Directorate. (Prereq Circle 3) Grand Magus: Accomplished operating member of the Directorate. (Prereq Circle 6) Director of “Listed Office”: Administrative chiefs of the Directorate (Prereq Circle 9) Arch Magus: A High Council level appointment tasked with the administration and operations of its Ministries within the empire. Appointed by the Emperor, he reports directly to him and the Consuls. History
The Directorate of the Magi was first created after the Larkian Reformation’s of 4a3120 after Kas’ryn Doth’Dakar ascended to Emperor after the Empress Sierra was struck down in battle, and Larkian royalty abdicated the throne. Its initial mandate was to census and registrar arcane magic users all across the empire and its client nations in an attempt to coordinate arcane magics and its users to a commonality. The size and scope of the Directorate continued to increase as the senate bestowed more resources and lent more structure to its policy initiatives in an attempt to increase its grip over arcane magics within Lark and its client nations. Today, the Directorate is responsible for the governance of all arcane magic within the empire and its client nations. Its mandates include the setting and enforcement of magical policy and law, registration and enforcement, research and strategic implementation, resource management, and the coordination of its members towards a commonality. The directorate also serves as an advisory body to the senate, as well having a seat on the High Council of Lark. In which the Arch Magus advises the council in all matters arcane. The Office of Regulation and EnforcementThis office is by far the largest bureaucracy within the Directorate with thousands of support staff, and its presence is palpable to not only the common citizenry and its travelers but Larkian nobility, and governmental agents. This is largely due to the immense task of the registration and licensing of all arcane magic users and items throughout the empire. To accomplish this task the Directorate had to create hundreds of regional outposts all with the capacity to administrate and police their respective sector. Most careers with-in the Directorate start in this office. Civic Magic Permits Class 1: Minor magics - Any item or ability that encompases a 0-2nd spell circles Class 2: Lesser magics- Any item or ability that encompases 3rd-6th spell circles Class 3: Major magics- Any item or ability that encompases 7th-9th spell circles Class 4: The Liberum (The Unrestricted): No restrictions and epic magics Civic Licensing Type 1 - Dealer in Magic other than destructive devices Type 2 - Pawnbroker in Magics other than destructive devices Type 3 - Collector of Curios and Relics Type 4 - Manufacturer of Ammunition, Arms and Armor. Type 5 - Manufacturer of Rod, Staff, Wand, and Wondrous Type 6 - Dealer or Pawnbroker in Magic (no restriction) The Directorate of Liaisons
This office is widely considered to be the most prestigious and respected posts within the Directorate. This office is tasked with communications and the coordination of arcane magical resources amongst the various government ministries and private citizens of the empire. Typically this office is among the first to be approached when its members reach out to the directorate as most requests for aid, advice, arbitration, or request are fielded via this office. This office has the exclusive right to conscript arcane magic users and items if necessary for a term of service. Failure to be compelled often times can result in fines, imprisonment, civil forfeiture, and in extreme circumstances death. The Directorate of Defense
This office is tasked with the arcane defenses of the empire. This office is notoriously difficult to acquire an appointment as many levels of security clearance are required to even become a staffer. These appointments also require a extensive knowledge of military tactics and a deep understanding of applied military magics. These two aspects combined make it difficult to gain high level appointments and are most often times reserved for career, retired, or inactive military personnel and their staffs because they already have been vetted so extensively and already possess the requisite knowledge and experience required. Side note: The Director of Defense enjoys an unusual amount of clout and influence due to the unwieldy amount of the imperial budget dedicated to its purpose. Prerequisite: Profession Soldier by ranks, Spellcraft by ranks Initiate: Minimum Ranks 4, Profession Soldier and Spellcraft Magus: Minimum Ranks 8, Profession Soldier and Spellcraft Grand Magus: Minimum Ranks 16, Profession Soldier and Spellcraft The Director of Defense: Minimum Ranks 20, Profession Soldier and Spellcraft The Directorate of Transportation and Logistics
This is the newest office within the directorate. It was created initially in response to ley lines around the empire becoming suddenly and without notice, inactive. Unable to take advantage of existing transportation networks founded by the Church of Sardinal and then relinquished to the Church of Dardantis the empire and its citizens found themself without access to a staple of the empire in which many ways of life came to deeply rely upon. The plot grew more apparent when it was established that it wasn't the circles themselves that were compromised but the very ley lines themselves that were becoming inactive. Even as the empire expanded so to did the areas of inactiveness. In response to this, the Emperor Kas’ryn Doth’Dakar declared an imperial edict for the creation of the most elaborate arcane teleportation network ever conceived. The sheer size and scope of this network was immense and the Emperor directed the The Office of Liaisons to conscript every able minded mage for the construction of his vision. This new network was designed with a capacity in mind to allow for the cheap, efficient, and secure transportation of not only Larkian military assets, but also for its citizens, travelers, and traders alike. The task of the administration, upkeep, and creation of new destinations and old falls solely with this office. Its imperial budget was made to reflect that. In a stroke of genius by The Arch Magus Nasteem Doth’Dakar convinced the High Council that The Ministry of Strategic Services were better suited to provide the security of the network. He argued in addition to their expertise that the MoSS was also responsible for the security of all of the empires state structures via its imperial mandate. They agreed. This change afforded the largest part of The Office of Transportation and Logistics budget to be reallocated to the MoSS. The Tribune of the MoSS seen this as a windfall because not only would this drastically increase his funding but also the size and scope of the MoSS. The Tribune lent his considerable influence to the measure and pushed it through the Senate. What wasn't accounted for by the Tribune was the incredibly vast sum of money being collected each day that flowed into the Directorate’’s coffers by the administration of its network. Monies that could be used at the discretion of the Directorate, ultimately Nasteem Doth’Dakar. Today, the vast network operates in all of the empire's territories, client nations, and protectorates bringing to and fro all manner of people, goods, and government assets to even the most far flung destinations of interest. The Directorate of Applied Arcanum
This office is tasked with four main objectives. First the DoAA is responsible for the accreditation of magic university's throughout the empire. They issue state aptitude tests, entrance exams, and set the state curriculum. Secondly, it's responsible for the continuation of education within the Directorate of the Magi on matters of arcana, spellcraft, and all schools of magic. Third, the DoAA is responsible for the administration and operations of one of the largest single library and tome hold on several, The Annatheum of Lark. Its "collections are universal, not limited by subject (arcane, divine, or mundane), format, or national boundary, and include research materials, scripts, scrolls, tomes, historical accounts, and literature from all parts of the three worlds. Lastly, the DoAA is responsible for the coordination of the research and development of magics. Typically the DoAA is tasked by the the different offices within the Directorate of the Magi. This office also operates a top secret classified agency responsible to formulate and execute undirected research and development projects to expand the frontiers of magic, often beyond immediate requirements of the State. The Directorate of Arcane Resource
This office is tasked with the identification, archive, and enumeration of all magical items, components, and other assets. These inventories once identified, archived, and enumerated are stored in the Capitoline Vaults for future use or assignment by the state. Personel from this office often times find themselves operatives attached to the Ministry of Enumeration. This office is also tasked with creation and acquisition of magical items and paraphernalia. This office has been known to work closely with the Directorate of Regulation and Enforcement to “draft” Registrants capable of crafting items the empire deems necessary for its continued success. This office also makes recommendation to the Ministry of Strategic Service for the acquisition or ceasure of magic items across the three worlds. Typically this is facilitated by dispatching Forces of Four, but may include recommendations that may be even as large as military action. The Council of Arch Magics
This is an supposed advisory panel within the directorate, but chaired by the Pontifex Maximus of the College of Pontiffs and the Arch Magus of the Directorate of the Magi. Not exclusive to arcane magic users, and may include personal from many different directorates, government ministries, divine institutions, and private foreign operators. Not much is known about the council as it meets in secret and the contents of those meetings are considered some of the most classified information available with-in the empire. Imperial Military The Imperial Military is the professional land forces of the empire, comprising of infantry units, ranged units, specialists, and calvary forces. The basic minimum term of service is 25 years for short life expectancy, 50 years for mid range life expectancy, and 100 years for long life expectancy. These forces are organized into 4 basic groupings. Legions, Auxilia, Mercani, and Detachments, operating in one of four basic states of readiness; garrisoned, active, inactive reserve, and leave. Entire units and or individuals within them are constantly transitioning in status for myriads of reasons, but typically is associated to the rotation of units from the front lines of campaigns in prolonged deployment or units that suffered critical loss. In turn garrisoned units or more rarely inactive reserve are activated to replace or offer reprieve to armies that's units are transitioning from active status.
Garrisoned Status: The majority of the empire is a vast untamed landscape, and its citizens desire security from its dangers. Garrisoned units are troops deployed to regional territories of the empire, and are under the direct command of the provincial governors. These units are often used in situations that require an extended large scale deployment of presence to thwart invasion, harassment, and civil unrest. Active Status: The empire is in a near perpetual state of expansion, and the majority of expansions are done so through military campaigns. Any unit on campaign in the realm whether its domestic or foreign deployment is considered to be activated. These units are under the direct command of the imperial hierarchy.
Inactive reserve: The empires veterans are extremely important to the Imperial Military. Proven loyalty and combat prowess can be all the difference in times of war and politics. Inactive reserve status is given to and retained by every retired or honorably discharged soldier in the military. At a moments notice the consuls or the emperor need only the stomp their feet and return any of these veterans to service.
Leave: Granted via the imperial hierarchy. Soldiers may be offered leave for various circumstances typically being recreation, reward, personal matters; and rapine, pillage, and plunder. This status can be as short as hours to as long as years, in rare extreme cases even centuries.
Recruiting Training and Conditioning.
Standards
The empire defines able bodied men and women in mechanical terms as persons or monster with minimum attributes that equal a 10 in STR, DEX, and CON.
The empire defines able minded men and women in mechanical terms as persons or monsters that have a minimum attributes that equal a 8 in INT, and a 10 in WIS.
These minimum requirement ensures the recruits potential to effectively perform at the baseline of every other soldier of the empire. This is especially important when being able to determine the physical and mental capabilities and limitations of the armed force as a whole.
Recruitment
The empire has an ongoing open recruitment policy to allow any able bodied and minded citizens the right to serve in some capacity with-in the Larkane imperial war machine. In this regard military recruiters work closely with the Ministry of Interior using information gained from the Imperial Personal Act to identify qualified potential recruits.
The pay, benefits, and cultural status afforded to base infantry and specialists is typically enough to entice qualified candidates to join the service for a promise of a bright future for themselves and their families. If that still isn't enough the empire engages in massive propaganda to extol the virtues of service to the empire.
Recruitment in newly conquered territories offer an alternative to the more ubiquitous options afforded to the newly conquered, like slavery or death. Once willing reeducated these peoples are offered entrance into the Auxilia.
Basic Training
Recruits are sent to one of the regional training camps, in which they are indoctrinated and conditioned for service. This 8 month process transforms civilians into soldiers using a variety of methodology and techniques to teach the soldier in basics of marching, survival, and fighting; as well as army life, culture, and customs.
This is typically done in several phases
Phase 1: Conditioning Mind and Body
The recruits are pushed to his or her physical and mental limits and beyond, days and nights are filled by physical exercises and obstacles designed to condition their bodies and minds against extreme exertion and mental fatigue. The recruit is introduced to the patron god of the military Cyian Imperator Divinus, encouraging them to seek his strength and approval while the recruit endures the regular employance of the horrors of sleep deprivation, starvation, thirst, exposure, and constant threat of harm or disciplinary action This ramps up to the recruit performing these conditioning's in full kit. The recruits typically reach or is made to reach the limits of their endurance effectively breaking their spirit.
Phase 2: Century Assignment, Education, and Marching
Once initial individual assessments are made, the recruit is assigned a century and a partner. After weeks of brutal physical and mental exertion the recruits are aloud to recuperate in the sense of not being subject to the horrors of Phase 1. However the recruit will find himself in a situation requiring teamwork, where one man's failure equals the centuries failure. The recruit and his century are then taught the basic military marches. The century marches 8 hours a day in formation and in full kit.
Reinforcement of subscribing to the beliefs of the patron god Cyian and the Eternal Emperor Kas’ryn, through priests serving Mass, offering sacraments, and extolling thier virtues
Phase 3: Overland Travel, Camp life, and Survival
The recruit and his century march for 8 hours per day and another 8 hours learning the basics of survival, camp construction, and the ins and outs of camp life. During the march Drill instructors keep disciplinary vigil over all the technical aspects of overland travel and begin to berate the recruits about what it means to be a soldier pointing out their inadequacies and what standard of excellence they are expected to live up to, spelling out the would be punishments for would be derelict soldiers and the would be honors living up to the high standard of excellence expected of them.
They are taught the ancient religious customs and beliefs of the military, all the while further reinforcing the belief in seeking the grace of their patron god and emperor.
Phase 4: Combat, Tactical Drills, and Profession: Soldier
Up until this point recruits haven't even been able to unsheathe their weapons, They spend the majority of their time being taught the basics of combat using the standard kit, they are introduced to basic tactical drills, formations, and tactics.
Further reinforcement of religious demagoguery is applied at every opportunity.
Phase 5: Confidence, Morale, and Team Building
By this time recruits that remain have proven mental and physical endurances, been taught the skills they need to survive on campaign and taught the basics of combat and tactics., Team building exercises designed to incorporate the entire breadth of what they have learned are organized pitting century against centur. Capture the flag, take the objective, century line spars, duels, and many other war games are all used to great effect in building the confidence, morale, and pride of the century.
Graduation
Graduation is a series of religious ceremonies where the recruit and his century receives the blessings of Cyian and the emperor through rites like “The Blood Oath”, “Peace through War Pledge” , “The Blessing of the Lark” , and finally “The Presentation” . Recruits are encouraged to invite their families to witness these rites and once completed celebration ensues, and the newly minted soldiers are given 3 days leave.
Once the rites have been performed the recruit metaphorically transforms into the soldier and final Terms of Service are signed. At which point the century is available for dispatch.
Additional Training
Throughout various times in an soldier's term of service they may have the opportunity to gain additional training in combat, tactics, and profession: soldier. Increasing their effectiveness. In these areas.
Some soldiers may show exceptional potential and be given the opportunity to study in Lark’s prestigious Military Academies to become Non-commissioned officers, officers, and Legates.

The Mercani are temporary as needed forces paid for a specific term of service. They may or may not conform to traditional Larkian organizations and typically are recruited from “independent organizations” both foreign and domestic.
Detachments
Detachments are what lends the Imperial Military its most prized attribute, its amazing flexibility. They can enhance the ability of legion to help respond to any threat and complete all most any task required of them. Detachments can be created in a myriad of sizes from just a few men that overlay a century to entire units that attach to the legion itself. Once attached they follow the direct command of its role leader and or the direct command of the organization in which its attached.
Overlay Detachments Any detachment that adds an as needed function, skill, service, or repertoire to a century, cohort, or legion. These detachments can be pre arranged or created in real time to facilitate an immediate need.
Overlay Command Comprised of agents of the various ministries of the empire. Overlay Command has its own unique command structure and support staff. Overlay Command travels with the legion(s) or are static posts to regional garrison forces. Each of the Ministries has an appointed lead within the legion(s) known as Role Leaders, and are tasked with the coordination of a finite pool of men with various abilities to facilitate a pre ordained or immediate real-time need of the tribune, legate, or prefect. Overlay Command is also responsible for real-time communications of the legion(s), especially between the command and high command structure. Using mundane tools such as horns, flags, and flares or magical methods like scrying, sending, group sending, telepathy, and other potent magic and items. Overlay Command also administers the legions magical resources and items, including rods, staffs, wands, and wondrous.
Overlay Command Pool Is quite simply the pool of experts, adepts, and other classes available to the Overlay Command Detachments.
Unit Detachments Any unit sized detachment that performs a specific function to the Legion(s). These unit sized Detachments are pre ordained and offer little flexibility in terms of sculpting them to the immediate need of high command due to the size and scope of the detachment. Still these units come in a myriad of sizes and often comprised from a myriad of different repertoires to facilitate its functionality.
Evocardi
The Evocardi aka the general’s bodyguard, is a cavalry force unit of 40 heavy horse. Often hand picked by the Legate or tribune, they can be comprised of any man the tribune or legate deem fit. This usually is a radical mix of friends, family, retinue, Veteran Calvarymen, and other agents of the empire. The Ministry of Strategic Service can provide whole or filler units as needed.
Core of Engineers Each unit included a body of professional engineers, architects, surveyors, foremen, craftsmen, and other artisans for siege works and the construction of bridges, roads, camps, fortifications and other projects. The Core of Engineers commandere its manual labor from the soldiers in which they were attached, and therefore each larkane legionary and auxila are equipped with an entrenchment tool (a single tool configurable to spade, pick, or axe) in their standard kit. Other skilled labor was pooled from a class of troops known as immunes.
Side note: There is a deal of prestige working for this type of detachment, as its well known that is was a favorite tool of Cyian Doth’Dakar. One of the most prevalent examples was when he used this type of detachment to great effect by diverting a massive river from flowing to Ardent Falls cutting the city off from its precious life line, and instigating its total surrender.

Organization The legions and auxilia conform to a very basic but effective manipular legionary format. 5 Centuri (100 men) to a Cohort (500 men), 10 cohorts to the Legion (5000 men), and as many legions grouped together as needed to facilitate its mandate. Each of these building blocks can be “manipulated” on a per case basis to fit the need of legion. This mechanic is facilitated by what's known as an attachment, which can lend a myriad of complex interstitial compliments to the centuri, cohort, or legion as a whole. These are the basic building blocks with-in the Imperial military.
The Centuri The smallest block of organization within the manipular legionary format. Consisting of 100 Legionnaires, lead by a Centurion. Each centurion had under his command seven principles (officer class) the Secundus Centi, Secretarius, Warlock, Churgeon, Liaison, Orienteer and Signifier.
Signifier: The century’s standard-bearer (Expert,Adept, or Warrior)(Prof Soldier)
Orienteer: The century’s chief navigator and terrain specialist (Expert or Adept)(Survival)(Prof Soldier)
Commune: The century’s chief communications officer and translator (Expert or Adept)(Decipher Script)(Language: Drow,Dwarven,Elven,Orc,Goblin,Giant, Common)(Prof Soldier)
Securea: The century's chief security officer, punitive enforcer, and Watch Commander. (Expert)(Prof Soldier)(Search)(Listen)(Spot)(Sense Motive)(Heal)
Churgeon: The chief surgeon and medical officer. (Adept)(Ranks in Heal)(Prof Soldier)(Ability to Cast 1st Circle Divine)
Warlock: The century’s magical officer. (Adept)(Ability to cast 1st circle arcane spells)(Spellcraft)(Prof Soldier)
Secretarius: The Century’s chief administrative officer and knowledge adviser. Responsibilities include the administrative obligations of the century; including requisition, payroll, the daily log, all manner reports ie force depletion, force readiness, force status etc. (Expert)(Decipher Script)(Knowledge Arcana, Religion, Nature, Regional, History)(Language: Drow)
Secundus Centi: A centurion-in-training and second-in-command of the century. (Warrior,Adept, or Expert) (Prof Soldier: max rank)
Centurion: Command officer of the century (Warrior,Adept, or Expert)(Prof Soldier: max rank)
Immunes: a separate class of soldier that is exempt from certain soldierly duties due to the possession of a special skill, such as healing, blacksmithing, carpentry, Etc (Warrior,Adept, and Expert)
Note: Explanation of the cohort and legion is not necessary in terms of organization, as they are only numerical expansions of the base building block (Centuri). Note: These roles are typically made up of npc classes such as warrior, adept, or expert; but may often times be replaced with various PC classes that can facilitate the main capacity of the skills involved.
Leadership
Cohortal Command
The centurion who commanded the first century of each cohort also commanded that cohort; this senior centurion was given the title pilus primus or first spear. Of the ten cohorts in each Legion, the tenth cohort was most junior. Legionnaires advanced in experience and centurions advanced in seniority in each cohort, with the first cohort consisting of the Legion’s most experienced and prestigious soldiers. The five centurions of the first cohort were senior to all other centurions; these officers where the pilus ordines aka Order of the Spear. The most senior among the pilus ordines, the commander of the first cohort and thus all other centurions, cohorts, and centuries, is the pilus Ultima aka The Ultimate Spear, the most prestigious position held by a Legionary soldier.
Legionary Command
The command structure for the generals operates on nearly the same concept. A person who commanded a legion was given the title Legatus aka General. Many legions could be assembled to facilitate the mandate of an army. Each legion is assigned a number, the last being the most junior. The legions rank amongst the other legions advances with experience and seniority of the legate, with the first legion being the highest ranking. When multiple legions are assembled, the highest ranking legate assumes the title of Military Tribune, commander of all assembled legates and thus all assembled legions. Legates are then ordered by rank and assume the title of 2nd-X Commander.
Military Tribune This is the highest rank of the imperial military high command. They are appointed by the Senate, confirmed by Oversight, and anointed by the Pontifex Maximus. They receive their orders directly from the respective Consul(s) in which they directly serve. These candidates are most often fielded from Senate members that have achieved the political rank of Praetor or higher.
Legatus This is the 2nd tier rank of the imperial military high command. They are appointed by the Senate, confirmed by Oversight, and anointed by the Pontifex Maximus. They receive their orders directly from the respective Consul(s) in which they directly serve. These candidates are most often fielded from Senate members that have achieved the political rank of Questor or higher.
Prefect This is the 3rd tier rank of the imperial military high command. They receive their orders and are appointed by military tribunes, legates, and provincial governors. They command any force as small as a century or as large as 9 cohorts. Typically Prefect candidates are fielded from senators that achieve the rank of Aedile, but operatives that have shown proven worth may be given the opportunity for continued advancement to begin their political career to achieve the rank of Aedile.
Provincial Command This is the high command of garrisoned troops within a region. Garrisoned units may only be activated prematurely from there normal schedule by the governor of the region in which the unit is garrisoned, an act of senate, or Imperial edict.
Lord Commander This is the commander of all provincial garrisoned forces and defenses of a region. The governor of a region may assume this title or bestow it.
Equipment and Items Legionary soldiers are given the standardized equipment package to fulfill the basic day to day needs of the soldier, to provide the necessary tools and equipment to facilitate their role, as well as some creature comforts. Auxilia soldiers mirror the legions except the base gear is of lower quality. Both Legionary and Auxiliary soldiers have a portion of pay and spoils deducted each year until these costs are covered. Once the initial cost of standard kit is covered the equipment belongs to them. Over the course of time soldiers that acquire magic items via spoil, honors, and or purchase are also considered the personal property of the legionnaire.
Side Note: A catalog of approved magic items are also available for purchase to soldiers at market value less 20%. Once the rank of Corpus is reached purchase plans are available, but the item is still considered owned by the state until paid in full.

Larkane Soldiers Boot
One of the largest single expense afforded to all soldiers or agents that travel on foot. This masterwork openwork boot is comprised of alchemically enhanced leather straps and heavy soles, designed for functionality, comfort, durability, and versatility.
The upper, quarter, flank and toe of the boot are designed to facilitate of number of needs, the base design is a simple openwork (strapped) configuration that allows the feet to breathe easily that prevents moisture accumulation and allows the soldier to stay in relative good health and comfort. These boots can be configured to accommodate several inserts.
Waterproofing - An alchemical insert that prevents the soldiers feet and ankles from getting wet, but letting moisture out so the foot can still breathe. Insulation - An insert made from alchemically treated thick furs to provide protection from cold. Toe Guard - A steel overlay of the toe that offers protection from crushing slashing and piercing attacks or accidents
The soles of the boot are designed to accommodate 8 screw in attachments on the sole and heel, that facilitate the legions need for versatility. Using 4 sole slots of any given attachment (except Snow/Sand Shoe) will gain the benefit of that attachment. Stud - Round 1 inch diameter semi-flat convex metal studs that increase the durability of the alchemically treated sole, as the studs wear out they are simply replaced.
Cleat - Round 1 inch diameter metal studs, that have two protruding rectangular ¾ inch cleats, designed to move more easily over rough terrain. When suffering from the effects of wind the soldier is treated as one category size larger on the wind effects table. Climbing\Ice Spike - Round 1inch diameter studs, that have single 1 inch spikes attached to the toe and mid-sole that facilitate secure footing in extreme rough terrain like mountains and ice. Snow\Sand Shoe - Uses all the sole attachment slots, Snowshoes work by distributing the weight of the person over a larger area so that the person's foot does not sink completely into the snow or sand, a quality called "flotation"

Travel and Movement
The Approach March
Once the legion was deployed on an operation, the marching began. The approach to the battlefield was made in several columns, enhancing maneuverability. Typically a strong vanguard preceded the main body, and included scouts, cavalry and light troops. A tribune or legatus or other officer often accompanied the vanguard to survey the terrain for possible camp locations. Flank and reconnaissance elements were also deployed to provide the usual covering security. Behind the vanguard came the main body of heavy infantry. Each legion marched as a distinct formation and was accompanied by its own baggage train. The last legion usually provided the rear force, although several recently raised units might occupy this final echelon.
The Regular Step - As the name suggests, this is the normal marching pace of Larkane legions, this pace allows for overland movement of 16 miles in 8 summer hours not in rough terrain or inclimate weather.
Step and a Half: This step is the fastest marching speed until the unit before a unit has to begin jogging and allows for an overland movement speed of 12 miles in 8 summer hours not in rough terrain or inclimate weather.
Hustle: This step is the basic run speed of the legion the absolute fastest speed that a legion can move while keeping formation, and allows for an overland movement speed of 8 miles per hour before needing to make Fortitude saves (dc10+ 2 per hour).
Half-step - This step is the slowest of marching speeds, typically used if forces need to move with enhanced caution or after prolonged physical exertion.
Forced March- When the legion needs to continue on towards its objective or needs to acquire a tactical advantage by getting somewhere first the commander can issue a forced march. Which means the legion will continue at regular step beyond the normal 8 hours of travel. Forced marches can be a brutal affair as the legion is required to make a Fortitude save (DC10 + 2 per hour of travel beyond the normal 8) or become fatigued, if a fatigued legionnaire fails a forced march save again he becomes exhausted.
Fortified Camps Legions on a campaign typically established a strong field camp, complete with palisade and a deep ditch, providing a basis for supply storage, troop marshaling and defense. Camps were recreated each time the army moved, and were constructed with a view to both military necessity and religious symbolism. There are always four gateways, connected by two main intersecting streets, with the intersection at a concentration of command tents in the center. Space was also made for an altar and religious gathering area. Everything was standardized, from the positioning of baggage, equipment and specific army units, to the duties of officers who were to set up sentries, pickets and orders for the next day's march. Construction could take between 2 and 5 hours with part of the army laboring, while the rest stood guard, depending on the tactical situation. The shape of the camp was generally rectangular, but could vary based on the terrain or tactical situation. A distance of about 60 meters was left clear between the entrenchments and the first row of troop tents. This gap provided space for marshaling the legionnaires for battle and kept the troop area out of enemy missile range.
Breaking Camp After a regimented breakfast at the allocated time, trumpets are sounded and the camp's tents and huts were dismantled and preparations made for departure. The trumpet then sounded again with the signal for "stand by to march". Horses and wagons of the baggage train would be loaded and units formed up. The camp would then be burned to the ground to prevent its later occupation and use by the enemy. The trumpets would then be sounded for a final time to signalling the type of march and base direction.

Main Operating Base
A main operating base is the secured operational level military position used to maintain a tactical stronghold within a region, used primarily to support and secure its forward bases and supply lines. These are security minded fortress’ with city level defenses and fortifications that can withstand prolonged siege. Troops rotating in and out the front, wide patrols, baggage and pleb trains; all adding to the abundance of activity in and around these locales.
Forward Operating Base
A forward operating base is any secured forward operational level military position, that is used to support strategic goals and tactical objectives for legions on campaign. forward bases often contain troop reserves, an advanced medicus, blacksmith, fletcher, stables, overlay command, unit detachments, and other logistical facilities. The base may be used for an extended period of time, especially in siege scenarios. FOBs are traditionally supported by Main Operating Bases that are required to provide backup support to them.A FOB also improves reaction time to local areas opposed to dispatching from regional command.
Security Outpost
Security outposts are extremely common through the empire and also found along secure routes and supply lines through areas legions are campaigning in. Typically outposts servicing a supply line or secure route will occur approximately every 20 miles. They can be constructed with relative ease with common materials, more permanent and elaborate outposts can be erected depending on the tactical situation or available resources in the region. They conform to three basic configurations based on size, mission, and importance.
Small Outpost
Typically built atop a rampart, most configurations include a 40x40 perimeter traversable wall, 14ft high, and 5ft wide. each corner has a tower wall that extended outwards slightly, so as to be able to observe the exterior of the walls on either side. In addition to arrow slits, smaller artillery such as scorpions and ballista can be can be mounted on top for extra defense.
There is one gate through the walls, in which the doors are typically made from wood and metal banding, fired then soaked in a boric acid solution and treated periodically making it relatively fire, insect, and rot resistant.
In the center a single 20x20 tower that usually extends 50ft into the air in which battlements are placed atop for archers or small artillery. The tower has an externally wrapping staircase that also leads to the top with platforms and railings typically for every 20 ft in height. The interior is an open design used to maximize space for guard quarters and supplies.
Medium \ Large Outposts
Generally medium and large outposts are scale ups of the small configuration to accommodate more amenities, guards, structures, resources, and defenses. All depending on being able to facilitate its mission and importance.
Tactical Maneuvers and Formations
Every good general of Lark is well versed in the arts of war and military tactics and knows a well thought plan barely survives the enemy and adaptation is crucial, most of all tho he understands a disorderly army is no army at all and his army’s discipline training and resolve will win the day.
As the legates and tribunes understand the finer points of war the mere soldier can't be expected to. This is why soldiers of the empire are so heavy conditioned and drilled to obey orders without consideration, to be able to execute precise tactical formations under any circumstance.
Once the overall strategy is confirmed the legions are typically laid out taking in careful considerations of the strengths and weakness of his legions and the enemies. The legate forms a plan using the best formations for success and executes his plan. As the battlefield develops, adjustments may need to be made, troops positioned, weaknesses shored up, advantages exploited. The legate has essentially a playbook at his disposal, maneuvers and formations that allow the legate to respond to the battlefield proactively and reactively in real time.
Some examples
Testudo - A mobile formation that centuries can execute that offers full cover from any targeted abilities and ranged attacks. Channels - This formation creates avenues between line formations of centuries or cohorts allowing the enemy the opportunity to penetrate deep into the line at the price of being overly exposing the flanks and removing any ability for a cohesive effort to retaliate.
Rolling Flank - This formation creates a numbers advantage to one of the flanks in an attempt to roll up the line of the opposition creating an opportunity for flank obliteration and line routes.
Heavy Flying Wedge - a brutal heavy cavalry formation used to overrun and penetrate the enemy center lines, creating opportunity for heavy infantry charges that can divide the opposition.
Manipular Lines - This maneuver allows for the arranging and rearranging the width and depth of lines.
Infantry Assault charge- This maneuver is executed by heavy or light infantry, which can use a variety of approach marches depending on tactical situation to a range of 30 m then release up to 3 devastating volleys of pilum at the target followed by a a full charge.
Full Barrage - This action is the typical opening salvo in the battle where artillery and ranged units unleash their devastating fury to wreak havoc by savagely inflicting monstrous casualties in precise barrages of missiles ranging from arrows and balista to exploding alchemical firepots. Armies have been known to rout just from witnessing the wide scale horrific traumas being inflicted all around and amongst their peers which typically leads to fight or flight
Defensive Triple Aces This manipular line formation that arranges infantry in 3 lines, with light infantry in the first line, heavy in the 2nd line, in channels formation , pike in 3rd ready to move to thwart cavalry charge, and calvary on the flanks.
This formation can be used to great effect if the initial barrage instigates a charge or route. If instigating a charge the light infantry ready volleys of pilum and release then retreat into the channels of the heavy infantry, if instigating a rout calvary are used to attack high priority targets like archers and opposing artillery or simply ride down the fleeing.
Logistics
Simply stated the logistical capabilities of an armed force largely determines how successful a campaign will be, this is one of the true universal laws of war. This is why the empire invests heavily in such elaborate and redundant security minded supply routes, using a multitude of solutions to facilitate the needs of the legions.
Supply Depots
Supply depots is a type of lightly fortified military installation used mainly as a temporary storehouse and hub for goods and provisions. Baggage trains flow up and down regional supply line networks bringing essential resources to the legions and its bases.
Baggage Train
These are the most common types of detachments used in the Imperial Military, typically two per century. These detachments typically consist of a large cart, several beast of burden, and a contingent of guards and drivers. These baggage trains are primary responsible for transporting additional tools, goods, provisions, and ammunition; as well as the transportation of larger items required for daily camp construction. These units also can facilitate the transport of a wide variety of military equipment and sundry such as artillery units, command structures, mail, slaves, plunder, and the dead.
Pleb Train
Is a pejorative term used for the civilians that literally follow the legions around on campaign. These civilians travel within the relative safety of the supply lines and offer a host of goods and services not provided by the military. These tent cities spring up around temporary bases and more permanent fortifications. These frontier entrepreneurs peddle in booze, women, and minor sundries but command higher prices that one could get in normal markets making it very lucrative.
Fair Pay, Forfeiture, and Seizure
In military campaigns it's common practice for the legions to practice this policy. As the legions march through a region military scouts identify and relay information regarding provisions and other regional assets that the legions may require. Farms, livestock, stables, slaves, as well as keeps or light fortifications are the most common target.
If the legions need to put this policy into effect within the empire's borders citizens are offered fair pay, paying out the going rate of the commodity plus 10%. Fair pay can also be used when traveling in foreign territories in which the High Command wishes to avoid any diplomatic entanglements.
When traveling in hostile foreign territories the legions will plunder local and regional resources not only to replenish supplies but to tactically remove the regions ability to supply or collude with the enemy.
